GLC: Andalusite
Named after Andalusia, where it was first discovered, a gem that is usually mined in Brazil and recently in Africa, which is a member of Silicate Family, a beautiful gem that, when well cut, displays a wonder of nature, "pleochroism." The Poorman’s Alexandrite Andalusite does not change color, but due to its obvious pleochroism, it simply shows different colors at the same time when viewed from different directions. It usually turns from yellowish green or olive green to orangy brown with usually an excellent color contrast that makes it easy to get noticed. A Collector Gem, Rare In Large Sizes Andalusite remains relatively unknown among the average consumer. However, it is one of the major collector pieces that any gem collector seeks to own. Pieces in 3 to 5ct sizes are classified as rare gems, specifically if relatively clean. Andalusite is usually included, specifically in large sizes; Rutile needles are common inclusions. Although Rutilated Andalusite is beautiful, flawless pieces are highly priced. Best In Emeralds Cuts And Cushions That shows its best color when well cut as a pleochroic gem. Ovals and other shapes are beautiful as well, however Andalusite beauty depends on its cut more than its shape. It stands out when set in jewelry because of its unique appearance.
